It's been a while - a long while infact since our last blog - the last blog we did, which was on LEGO set assembly square 10255. That was an epic build , the most detailed of all the modular buildings and insanely large at 4002 pieces and rrp @ £179.99.
Since then, in the LEGO creator modular line there has been the release of 10260 - the LEGO diner which sells at £129.99 in the UK and consists of 2480 pieces
This baffles me - i am literally scratching my head - why you may ask ?
Its the price tag and piece count difference between the sets
so to reiterate
10255 - assembly square - 4002 pieces - rrp £179.99
10264 - corner garage - 2569 pieces - rrp £159.99 (avail 1.1.2019)
10260 - Diner - 2480 pieces - rrp - 129.99
as you can see this doesn't make much sense on the whole scheme of things, Assembly square is clearly the best value with the highest piece count - then the diner at £129.99 - leaving the corner garage last in value for money..
So why is this set so much more expensive. is it any good , whats the design like, how long does it take to build and is it a worthy entrant into the LEGO creator modular line ?
This is the 14th building of the LEGO creator modular line , starting with the legendary LEGO set cafe corner , 10182 , back from 2007
Here is our quick review --
I was incredibly lucky to get this set before release - and was so exited, i missed some of the key details of this set. Printed on the box Which were pretty awesome ..
LET'S go through the formalities first :
LEGO set number - 10264
Name : Corner Garage
rrp : £159.99 uk
release : 1.1.2019
peice count - 2569
Bag count - 20 : labelled 1- 6
Build time - 10 hours
So all these questions about this set that was announced less than a month before release !
Well i can tell you your going to be surprised, this set is unassuming. I opened the box and was greeted by a sea of bags, 20 in total with smaller internal bags filled with smaller pieces, A standard 32 x 32 sandy beige baseplate - 2 x loose 16 x 4 light grey plates and one huge manual - with 225 pages . I just didn't know what it was. Was it the box that made me think this set wasn't so big . i was definitely wrong.
You can watch the unboxing video here ---
It's now Christmas eve, all my chores are done, time to put the Grinch on and start this build !!
Bag one is opened and there is a huge amount dark brown / reddish bricks small and large- this is defiantly a sorter . Once sorted and into piles i am thinking this set is going to be a breeze and still baffled by the amount of price difference between the sets
Bags 1, 2 ,3
Really steady build, nice and breezy not too many small pieces . This is the base of the garage and consists of half the build , i am warming towards this set - what a great build this is turning out to be - its all about the car bay , and the amazing new building techniques they have introduced - for example these new 2 x 1 flat rounded bricks - are an extremely unusual piece, but really help towards the facia of the building - they fit insanely well against traditional flat bricks , and enables to make a hinge with a low base, that you can attachs windows to - the hinge in this set therefore creates the new angled design and gives you the ability to build a 3 point structure as apposed to the traditional 4 corner structure. This is impressive also new and unique. There are some really nice touches inside the car garage, namely being the ingenious car lift , that raises via an external 2x16 that sits outside the building - you push the 2x16 into the building , and it raises the car lift - GENIUS -
then there is also the amazing way In which the garage door opens - the transparent garage roller doors , intelligently clip into 2 axles that roll up and down - i am trying not to spoil the build too much, i will tell you that was AMAZING - very well conceived and one the major features of this set ....
YAY to the octan gas pump - its a shame we didn't have more !
I also love the tow truck that comes with this set it has a nice mechanism and is a pretty intricate build ! a lot more challenging than thought - you can also fit the tow truck into the garage !
You can fit a car into the car bay -
I also noticed we are getting more internal space for room inside the building
after finishing bags 1 - 2 - 3 - the garage is complete, on completetion of the first stage of this building, . I am so infactuated with its imsplistic mechanisms , and little touches like tyre pump, car lift and cash register , and externally - the angled window is really something
I can now see bags 4 - 5 are for the top 2 floors and 6 is for the roof - your going to need more than a coffee table to sort this pile out -
The vets
I was most looking forward to this - we have a pet shop and now a vets , to be honest i was hoping for more - not build wise , this floor will take at least 3 hours of build time, its not the pleasure of the build or the building of an item then realising what it is. Its the lack of actual accessories and animals -
yes we have a frog
yes we have a bunny
yes we have a dog
and an awesome green and yellow parrot
But where the lizards the chameleons , the hedgehogs , snakes and so many more smaller animals that could have been in there ?
Granted it is Dr Jones vet clinic and there is a correlation between The vet in this set and Indiana Jones - hence the no snakes tile - i do like the frog incubator - and the fish tank, very cool touches
I just felt it was lacking animals - even throw some LEGO friends animals in there - we don't care.
Situated next to the vets is a nice waiting room with area with a sofa, armchair and parrot stand some flowers in a vase - the new flower stalks are awesome and look significantly better that the older ones .....
I was convinced I was going to be more impressed with this floor than the previous, which was the garage . I WAS MISTAKEN, even though i do like the vet clinic - the garage is something else - nice features and a pleasurable build - 10 out of 10 - the vet is cool, don't get me wrong and i did enjoy the build - but i didn't get that feeling that sense of !! WOW !! as on the first floor -
This is taking some time - bag 4 was huge and full of small pieces that make up the bases - the sofas and parrot stand, infact, on the outside of the building you can really see it taking shape , we are using as lot 1x1 half curved flats this is to make the masonry work for the front of the building - and this does look fantastic , it gives you a sense of age , like when you go round a city - LEGO has done an amazing mix of buildings and this is really fitting in well - even with the Diner ..
So onto floor 3
Ahhh the obligatory Apartment - think we have seen this in almost all the modular buildings, even in the ones with sparse or little interior, i look forward to this part of the build , this has an awesome open plan area with kitchen, bed, cooker, salt n pepper pots, which i did find very cute. Again there were problems - For example there is no rug, where did that go ? i did feel a sense of space and more of it - bigger interioes to come ???
I have to say However there is some awesome printed tiles, and a cool toy lorry that fits onto a shelf above the bed
Minifigs
6 minifigs in total with this set and as most modular fans know this is not unusual for LEGO modular collectors as they are not filled with insane ammounts of minifigs - more about the build and this turned out to be an excellent one -
all figs apart from 2 are pretty standrard
1 x mechanic
1 x tow truck driver
1 x scooter driver ( with blinde hair peice and helmet)
1 x child
1 x vet awesome print on the vet and unique
1 x guy with jumper -
my fave of all the figures that come with this set , and one of ther best figures to come with the moduilar sets - the print on his beige jumper is awesome ! i am sure i have a jumper just like that
LEGO we need more jumpers 👌
over all
Really intricate build ..
2569 pieces
Larger structure then thought
Larger interior than thought
Nice figs (especially the printed jumper)
Numbered bags 4 and 5 are a long haul ..
Really nice layout
New building techniques
Excellent shape of building
VERDICT !!
8 - 10
